WHEN From November 14, 2025 to February 15, 2026
The city of Bologna presents an important exhibition project dedicated to Michelangelo Buonarroti, exploring the special relationship the Renaissance master had with the city and its vibrant artistic scene. The exhibition focuses on the works, documents, and drawings connected to the artist’s Bolognese stays, shedding light on the creative dynamics, political contexts, and collaborations that shaped some of his most significant achievements.
Curated in collaboration with scholars and experts in the field, the newly opened exhibition at Palazzo Fava is part of a broader cultural program involving various locations in the city and the region. Its aim is to highlight Bologna’s historical and artistic heritage and to reinterpret Michelangelo’s role within the Italian Renaissance. The renewed interest in the relationship between the artist and Bologna will inspire a year of initiatives, thematic paths, and in-depth explorations, restoring centrality to this crucial artistic dialogue.
The exhibition brings together a selection of works, drawings, and historical documents that recount the master’s time in Bologna and the impact it had on his artistic development, including:
Archival documents related to his Bolognese commissions
Preparatory drawings and early studies
Materials illustrating his complex relationship with the Bentivoglio family
Insights into the project for the tomb of Pope Julius II and other local commissions
A unique opportunity to rediscover Michelangelo through the lens of Bologna and understand how the city’s cultural environment contributed to the evolution of his artistic language.
