"Guercino in the Studio": the exhibition at the National Art Gallery of Bologna

WHERE Pinacoteca Nazionale di Bologna, via delle Belle Arti 56

WHEN From 28/10/2023 to 11/02/2024

The National Art Gallery of Bologna presents an important exhibition project dedicated to the figure of Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, known as Guercino. Focused on the significant works of the master held in the museum, the exhibition delves into the early stages of his career, the reasons for the success of his workshop, and the master's relationship with his most trusted collaborators. The aim is to shed light on the professional, artistic, and entrepreneurial dynamics that characterized his prolific work.

Curated by Barbara Ghelfi and Raffaella Morselli in collaboration with the museum's staff, the exhibition opens to the public on October 28, 2023, and is part of a series of initiatives that will extend from the city of Bologna to various sites in the region and other important national museum venues. The renewed interest in the artistic tradition of Bologna and Emilia and in the figure of Guercino will lead several institutions this year to propose exhibitions and paths dedicated to this great master of Baroque painting, starting with the reopening of the Guercino Pinacoteca in Cento, named after the master, scheduled for November 2023.

The exhibition brings together approximately 30 works, including masterpieces by Guercino held at the National Art Gallery of Bologna and loans, as examples:

  • Madonna del Passero (1615-1616)

  • San Guglielmo riceve l’abito monastico (1620)

  • San Bruno adora la Madonna col Bambino in Gloria (1647)

  • Negazione di Pietro (1623 / 1626)

  • Padre Eterno (1646)

  • San Sebastiano curato da Irene (1619)

  • Autoritratto (Guercino and workshop, 1635, Genoa)

  • San Rocco e l'angelo (by Matteo Loves) from Fondazione Sgarbi Cavallini
